CV Joint Boot Question

Postby cianof » Tue Feb 01, 2011 7:36 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am replacing the inner cv boot from the left drive shaft. (The longer one)

I found a cheapish one online. It says its 01/2000 - Present. Couldn't find any other ones.

http://www.micksgarage.ie/autoparts.aspx?dept=327&MakeID=21&ModelID=1567&CarID=15053&AssemblyID=100074&b=57&ga=

The drive shaft I am fixing is from a 98 van. Does anyone know if there is a difference?

I know this sounds mad but have you tried a main dealer, while generally I avoid them at all costs they are sometimes good for somethings.

Personally I've found all after market Boots and Gaitors are made from really poor quality rubber and fail very early, I have been known to replace CV boots every year for a MOT on my other car, I got so fed up doing it I spoke to the garage who did the MOT's and he said dont buy aftermarket ones as there rubbish, so when they went again replaced them with main dealer ones and never looked back, sold the car some 4 yrs later and they where still fine.

So these days for CV boots and Steering gaitors I bite the bullet and go to the dealers  and to be honest I fund the price to be not much more...... at least you dont have to replace them again 12mths later 8)

Thanks for the advice Chris.

For reference the part number is:

3287 83 D/S GAITER KIT AXLE-SIDE JOINT G169

Ouch, turns outs its €85 (£72.59) plus vat for that from Citroen for that kit.

I don't know any more than you about the CV boot, but can heartily recommend Mick's Garage. I got a replacement front panel from there when I couldn't find one anywhere in the UK.

 cant beleive thats just for a single gaiter, whats in the "kit" its not the complete joint :?

I'd have expected maybe £30-£40 :?

A kit seems to contain 7 items for the inner joint.

1) Grease
2) Spring
3) Spring End
4) Some sort of small rectangular bit
5) A large washer thing
6) The boot and the metal cylindrical housing
7) The metal sealing band

Does anyone know what 4 and 5 might be?

I've decided to order from Micks garage on this one. Ordered the cv joint banding tool from ebay. Halfords have CV joint grease so will buy that too if I need it.

Job finished. No more clicking.

The kit I got came with cv joint grease, boot, metal housing, boot retaining ring and a pre-made cv band.

I used the spring and cap from the existing joint.

The retaining ring goes inside the larger end of the boot and this goes into the housing. Its a very tight fit and edge of housing is sharp.
I recommend wearing gloves for this bit.

You need a 3-legged puller (and circlip pliers) to get the cv joint tripod from the drive shaft.

The band that came with the kit was too small to be used with banding tool, so just used a pliers for that.

The metal housing at the other end is peened to seal the joint.

Must admit I've used zip ties instead of those band things, they seem to work fine and nice and easy as you dont need to remember to put them on 8)
